Review of Bajirao Mastani

FilmySphere critic · Rating 3.5/5

One of 2015’s best movies-Bajirao Mastani needs to be watched. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings to you a historical drama and gives you an insight into the life and times of Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao and his rise to power. The audience expects his films to be made on lavish sets, with elaborate props, wonderful screenplay, dialogue, beautiful cinematography, designer costumes, great action scenes and Bajirao Mastani again proves to be one of his grand signature movies. It is the love story of Peshwa Bajirao with the daughter of Maharaja Chhatrasal, Mastani who is trained skilfully in horse-riding, martial arts and spear throwing. Deepika Padukone plays the role of Mastani, the warrior’s love and second wife and the 30-year old actor portrays her role beautifully. She looks phenomenal and she has trained herself very well to handle the sword like a pro. She delivers fearlessly and has aced the role so masterfully that no one but Deepika could have done it. The role of Bajirao is played by Ranveer Singh and with that perfect Marathi accent we cannot but wonder if there could have been a better choice than Ranveer Singh with his shaved head and tuft. The act done by Ranveer is unbeatable and looking at it in hindsight it is impossible now to imagine anyone enact the same better. Ranveer was brilliant with his stellar performance and exuberant delivery. He has played a powerful role in the movie and surely Bajirao Mastani would prove to be a turning point in his career and assure him greater opportunities and success. Bajirao‘s first wife is Kashibai whose role is played by Priyanka Chopra. She serves her husband very diligently and loves him the most. Even when she finds out that Bajirao loves Mastani she does not leave him. She is angry, she sneers and does all she she can to get him back. Their marriage was fixed in their childhood. The undefeated warrior Bajirao was honoured with the title of Peshwa (Prime Minister) and fought his enemies valiantly to save his people. The moguls, his greatest enemies had attacked a fort and this is when Mastani, the princess of Bundelkhand comes to the warriors’ court in Pune seeking help to protect her kingdom and eventually falls in love with him. Bajirao goes against all odds, to marry Mastani even though his family is against their marriage and does not accept their relationship. The most important attraction of this movie is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s larger than life depiction of art work and huge sets. It is a visual treat not to be missed.
